Do chemical based or natural snake repellants work?

There are plenty of snake repellant products for sale online or at hardware and garden stores that promise to provide a magical barrier against snakes. The internet is filled with ads and recommendations for snake deterrent products, what we couldn't find was any product demonstrations of any of them actually turning a snake away.
